Process & Deadlines
Step-by-step overview from the initial meeting through submission and final presentation.
Steps at a Glance
1 — Initial Meeting
Get in touch early (ideally one semester before your planned start) to:
- Discuss topic ideas
- Clarify prerequisites
- Align on timeline and expectations

2 — Topic & Exposé Phase
After the initial meeting, an exposé (approx. 2–3 pages) is expected, covering:
- Problem statement and motivation
- Preliminary objectives and research questions
- Planned methodology
- Rough timeline
The exposé serves as the basis for the official registration.
3 — Official Registration
Registration is handled through the examination office of the department. Required documents:
- Completed registration form
- Confirmation from the first examiner (Prof. Dr. Rieger)
- Confirmation from the second examiner (external or another professor at the department)
From the registration date, the official processing time begins (bachelor’s thesis: 3 months, master’s thesis: 6 months).
4 — Working Phase & Supervision
Regular meetings (approx. every 2–3 weeks) are recommended during the working phase. Please bring:
- Current state of the work (outline, draft, results)
- Specific questions and open points
- Code/prototype if applicable
Interim results may be submitted as short progress reports (1 page).
5 — Submission
The finished thesis is submitted as:
- Digital version (PDF) via email to the supervisor
- (Optional: bound copy at the examination office)
- Code/artefacts uploaded at submission or in the university Git repository or online
Please include the mandatory statutory declaration as per the template.
6 — Final Presentation & Colloquium
After submission, a colloquium takes place:

The presentation should cover motivation, approach, results, and critical reflection.
Deadlines
Exact registration deadlines are published in the course catalogue and the examination office notices. Registrations are possible throughout the semester — typically towards the end of the lecture period: late January (winter semester, end: March 31) and late June (summer semester, end: September 30).
